Why not books ???

aWe at Eastern Public School follow International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme for grades Nursery to V, Middle Years Programme for grades VI to X and Diploma Programme for grades XI & XII.

The IB programme is concept driven inquiry based programme which is more practical and application-based. It has a broader spectrum of subjects that lead to the all-round development of students.

The purpose of IB is to produce global citizens. When a child studies in IB, the real challenge is in the quality of assignments, not in the amount of work assigned. IB examinations test students' knowledge and application, not their memory and speed. The focus of the IB pedagogy is on 'how to learn' rather than 'what to learn'.

As the textbooks are organized around subject specific skills, they challenge the implementation of inquiry based transdisciplinary curriculum. To overcome these problems we use books only for reference purposes. During each unit of inquiry our children are exposed to literature from different genres transcending the subjects which enables transdisciplinary thinking permeate their intellect .We have a large collection of books in our library and students are motivated and guided towards extensively using the library and ICT resources for research purposes and self-development.

Our students learn more useful material than ever before. In our classroom, students are shifted from being passive receptacles to active learners. Our job is to shift from dispensers of education to producers of environment that allows students to learn as much as possible.

We advocate that there is a need to give 21st century learning skills to our children which are collaboration, informational literacy and adaptation to change. IB is the foundation for lifelong learning; it becomes quite essential for our students to adapt to the 21st century skills during these developmental years. Our educational structure encourages social, thinking, communication, research and self-management skills making students responsible for their own learning which will not be possible if we stick with the traditional text book – rote learning approach.

Hence, there are no prescribed textbooks; students can choose their own books for reference.

Parents are requested to treat this book list as reference list only, not the cornerstone of knowledge.
